How can teachers support diverse readers so they can engage successfully in literacy activities?
I began my teaching career in a special education classroom. I was faced with many diverse learners and the challenge to help them all succeed despite their disabilities. I quickly learned that in education, one size does not fit all. A few years later, I transitioned into a regular education classroom and found myself in a similar situation. Rather than working with only stuggling students, I needed to discover how to motivate and inspire my average and above average students to reach their full potential as well. Despite the fact that my students were coming to my classroom with different backgrounds, levels of ability and motivation, I knew that the structure and philosophy behind my literacy instruction had to support all of my readers in their quest for success.
