Action Research: Teaching Metacognitive Strategies to Improve Accuracy and Fluency When Decoding
ECI 523
Students practiced skills to improve their fluency using performance based texts such as poetry and reader's theatre scripts. The students internalized the idea that fluent reading does not always equal speedy reading. The rate at which a reader reads must match the setting and purpose for the audience that is listening. The students had to monitor their own reading rate to match it to the purpose of the text and make sure their audience could comprehend what they were reading.

Today's Students Connect With Technology
Voki Web 2.0 tools are very versitle in the classroom. Today's students connect to technology and are motivated to use moden tools to complete assignments. I was able to use the program Voki in different ways to teach literacy skills to students in my class. First, I used taped repeated readings part of an intervention to help a student improve his oral reading fluency. Another student was able to publish and share her written work online by recording it into her Voki. |

Integrating Technology in the English Language Arts Classroom
ECI 511
Technology integration in classrooms is spreading faster and with more power each school year. In order to prepare our students to succeed and thrive in the 21st century, they must be able to use technology to find and share information quickly and effectively. The English language arts classroom is an ideal environment for students to be able to learn these skills. Teachers can utilize technological tools such as blogs, video and digital media, websites, podcasts and web 2.0 tools in their classrooms. The use of these technologies has great potential to support and reinforce more traditional literacy skills such as fluency, reading comprehension, response to literature and writing. Teachers in today’s classrooms must find ways to teach and utilize both technological and literacy skills to prepare students for their future.

How can Google Maps be used to teach absolute and relative location to second graders?
Students filled out an information sheet titled, "You're From Where?!!" so they would be able to write a description of their birthplace on the Google Map. This made the process of finding and describing points on a map much more personal and relevant to their lives. Additonally, they were able to read descriptions of other students' birthplaces which helped them to connect to the other students participating in the project.
